Trilobites

Trilobites came in many different shapes and sizes -- over 15,000 species are known. They are the classic symbol of early life.

Trilobites were hard-shelled marine invertebrates that lived in the seas from the beginning of the Paleozoic Era (over 500 million years ago) to the late Permian period (248 million years ago). The Cambrian Period is known as "The Age of Trilobites." They were very common and diverse. Some trilobites crawled along the sea floor, some swam, and others drifted with ocean currents. Some were herbivores (eating plants), some were detrivores (eating decayed material) and some were scavengers (eating carrion). The name “Trilobite” comes from them having hard, three-lobed shells (the axial lobe and two pleural lobes). These arthropods had jointed legs, compound eyes, and antennae. They ranged in size from less than 1/4 inch to over 2 feet long.

Our Trilobites were found in Utah, Morocco and China, and are from the Devonian and Cambrian Ages, making some of them over 500 million years old!
